McLemore Avenue is made up of mostly instrumental versions of the songs on the Beatles' Abbey Road, which had come out only months earlier, in September 1969. The title and cover are an homage to that record. 926 East McLemore Avenue was the address of the Stax studios in Memphis, as Abbey Road was for London's EMI Studios. As a nod to the Beatles' own medley, most of the selections are arranged into medleys.

Booker T. Jones said he was in California when he heard Abbey Road, and thought it "incredibly courageous" of the Beatles to drop their format and reinvent themselves. Something was released as a single and reached number 76 in the United States. The album peaked at number 107. The band produced and arranged it themselves.
