Hip Hug-Her came out on Stax in June 1967. Its title track was the band's biggest single since Green Onions, reaching number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the R&B chart. Their version of Groovin', first recorded by the Young Rascals, also did well, at number 10 on the R&B chart and number 21 on the pop chart.
It was the last of their albums produced by Stax co-founder Jim Stewart. From Doin' Our Thing onward the band produced themselves. Apart from the covers, the writing is credited to the four members. The title track later played under the opening credits of the film Barfly in 1987.
