Recorded in 1977 and 1978 at Scholz's Hideaway Studio, apart from the piano on A Man I'll Never Be, which Dave Butler recorded at Northern Studio in Maynard, Massachusetts. It was meant to be called Arrival until the band found that ABBA had released an album of that name two years earlier. Scholz produced, engineered and arranged it himself, and the sleeve notes state that no synthesizers and no computers were used. The Journey, a short instrumental, is the only song without drums. Scholz called it his favorite song on any of the first three albums.
It reached number one in the United States and Canada and number nine in the United Kingdom, and sold a million copies in its first ten days. The singles were Don't Look Back (number four), A Man I'll Never Be (31) and Feelin' Satisfied (46). Scholz later said it was not finished and that it was only 29 minutes long.
