In the Zone

Spears began writing songs on the Dream Within a Dream Tour and said she did not know at first what direction the record would take. Recording began in November 2002. She tried different producers to find those she clicked with, among them Bloodshy & Avant, R. Kelly, Moby, Guy Sigsworth, the Matrix and RedZone, the duo of Christopher Stewart and Penelope Magnet. The first song recorded was Touch of My Hand. Everytime was written with her backing vocalist Annet Artani and recorded in Los Angeles with Sigsworth.

RedZone made the first version of Me Against the Music. Spears played a finished version to Madonna while rehearsing for the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, and when Madonna liked it Spears asked her to take part. Madonna arranged and recorded her own additions, which turned the song into a duet.

It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 609,000 copies in its first week and was certified triple platinum in 2023. The IFPI ranked it the eighth best-selling album of 2003. Singles were Me Against the Music, Toxic, Everytime and Outrageous. The Guardian's Dorian Lynskey wrote that, unlike previous Britney albums, it had no filler and no shoddy cover versions. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine said it was where she had turned into Britney, the Adult Woman, while Rolling Stone's Jon Pareles complained that her voice was so processed its physicality almost disappeared. NPR's Amy Schriefer put it on a 2009 list of the 50 most important recordings of the decade.
