Spears returned to New York on 20 September 1999 to begin work, after six days off following her first tour. Producers on the record included Max Martin, Rami Yacoub, Per Magnusson, David Kreuger, Kristian Lundin, Jake Schulze, Rodney Jerkins and Robert John Mutt Lange. The title track and several others were recorded at Cheiron Studios in November 1999. Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know, co-written by Shania Twain and Lange, was recorded at Lange's villa in Switzerland in December. Her cover of the Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction was cut with Jerkins in Los Angeles from 24 to 26 February 2000.
Spears said it was hard following ten million and that the new album was edgier, with more attitude. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 1,319,193 copies in its first week, the fastest-selling album by a female artist since 1991. That first-week record for a woman stood until Adele's 25 in November 2015. It reached number two in the UK, has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, and was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2001 Grammys. Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone wrote that under the cheese surface, her demand for satisfaction was complex, fierce and downright scary.
