Owens wrote and recorded the song and released it as the B side of I've Got a Tiger By the Tail on Capitol 5336 in 1964. It did not reach the charts. Ray Charles then recorded it with backing vocals from the Jack Halloran Singers and the Raelettes, and his version reached number six on the Hot 100 in February 1966, number five on the R&B chart and spent three weeks at number one on the easy listening chart. It won two Grammys in 1967, for Best R&B Recording and Best R&B Solo Performance.

Charles said he did not record Owens's country songs out of disrespect. He was crazy about Buck, he said, and kept his own style while watching it work in different ways. Owens plays it at Carnegie Hall in a medley that begins with In the Palm of Your Hand.
