Together Again was the B side of a January 1964 single, with the faster My Heart Skips a Beat on the A side. Both went to number one and swapped places on the chart. Tom Brumley's pedal steel solo on the ballad is described by CMT as one of the finest steel guitar solos in the history of country music, and it inspired Jerry Garcia to learn the instrument. The Library of Congress offers Together Again from the Carnegie Hall album as its listening example.
Ray Charles had a pop hit with it in 1966, number 19 on the Billboard pop chart and number one on the adult contemporary chart. Emmylou Harris recorded it for her 1975 album Elite Hotel, and her version went to number one on the country chart in April 1976. In 1979 she and Owens recorded Play Together Again, Again as a tribute to the song.
