Dry & Heavy came out in 1977 through Island Records. Rodney produced it himself and recorded it at Harry J's studio, and it was the last album to include the musicians known as the Black Disciples. The Japanese reggae and dub band Dry & Heavy took its name from the record.
The Rolling Stone Album Guide wrote that it "counterbalances the anger and dread of the early albums" with an optimistic side. Fact magazine counted it among Burning Spear's peak-period greats, and PopMatters called it an absolutely crucial album for Rodney. Christgau, who gave it a B, singled out the sweetness of the vocals on "Throw Down Your Arms", "Any River" and the title song.
