The first Buzzcocks single on United Artists, backed with What Ever Happened To?, and the start of their work with Martin Rushent. Devoto and Shelley wrote it together, but Shelley sang it as the new frontman. It is the only Buzzcocks single with the bassist Garth Smith, who was dismissed soon after. Malcolm Garrett devised the sleeve, which carried a collage by Linder Sterling of a nude woman with smiling mouths instead of nipples and a clothes iron for a head.
The song's sexual content made it controversial, and the BBC banned it. Shelley later said it embarrassed him, the only one of his songs he listens to and shudders at. Heller wrote in Pitchfork that Shelley's chirpy hiccup was a boyish and bracing new sound in punk, unlike Devoto's sneer on Spiral Scratch. It later appeared on Singles Going Steady.
