Released by I.R.S. in the United States on 25 September 1979 as an introduction for the American public, it was the first Buzzcocks album issued in North America and coincided with their first US tour. Side one carried the band's eight United Artists singles in order and side two their B-sides. It reached the UK on United Artists on 16 November 1981 and charted in neither country.
Jason Heller of Pitchfork called the record a paragon of songwriting about the pain and joy of love and wrote that its peak was Ever Fallen in Love. Rolling Stone ranked it number 358 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums and number 250 in 2020 and 2023, and Pitchfork placed it 16th among the best albums of the 1970s in 2004.
