Caetano and Gil made Tropicália 2 to mark 25 years since Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis. It was recorded from March to May 1993 at Nas Nuvens and Polygram in Rio and at WR Salvador in Salvador.

The lyrics turn to politics: superpower imperialism, Third World poverty and the AIDS epidemic. Haiti links the Carandiru massacre to the history of slavery and refers to Paul Simon's The Rhythm of the Saints. The album also covers the Jimi Hendrix Experience's Wait Until Tomorrow. AllMusic's Alvaro Neder judged it good entertainment and, in its best moments, good art.
