Alone Again Or comes from Love's 1967 album Forever Changes, which PopMatters described as a marvel of strummed guitars, mariachi horns and chance-taking songwriting. Calexico's version, with music credited to Bryan MacLean, opens the 2004 EP Convict Pool, where it is played with Nicolai Dunger and his band and flamenco handclaps. PopMatters counted Love among Burns and Convertino's influences.
The cover has stayed in the band's repertoire: on setlist.fm it is their most-played song, with 455 performances. The 2023 Feast of Wire 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition inserts the band's version into the album as track 14 and closes its live disc, recorded at the China Theatre in Stockholm, with a 4:12 version.
