Recorded at the castle at Nörvenich over the winter of 1970 and 1971, it was a double LP built around long pieces such as Halleluhwah and Aumgn. Can played Paperhouse on the television show Beat-Club that August. The album reached 38 on the German chart. Ned Raggett of AllMusic called it a double album without a wasted note, and Pitchfork placed it 29th among the best albums of the 1970s. Alan Warner wrote about it for the 33 1/3 series.
