Zappa, who ran Straight Records, offered Beefheart complete artistic freedom. The Magic Band rehearsed the music for months in a rented house in Woodland Hills, restricted from leaving it, and survived on welfare and help from relatives. French described the atmosphere as cultlike. Van Vliet used a piano he had never played as his main compositional tool, and French turned the short patterns into notation and pieced them into songs. Pitchfork's Marc Masters wrote that French compared the work to building a solid wall with bricks of unequal size, and that Beefheart left French off the original credits.
Zappa originally proposed recording an ethnic field recording at the house, but Van Vliet insisted on a professional studio. At Whitney Studios the band recorded the instrumental tracks in a single session. Van Vliet overdubbed vocals over the next few days, hearing only the sound leaking through the studio window rather than headphones, so the vocals sit only loosely against the band. Some tracks came from elsewhere: the a cappella poems The Dust Blows Forward 'n The Dust Blows Back and Orange Claw Hammer were recorded on a cassette recorder at the house, and Zappa recorded The Blimp over the phone with Jeff Cotton reciting a poem.
It did not appear on any American chart and spent a week at number 21 in Britain. Lester Bangs called it in 1969 a total success and a brilliant, stunning enlargement of Beefheart's art. Peel said it was probably the work of art in popular music that people in other arts would understand as such. The Library of Congress holds it in the National Recording Registry.
