Golden Shower of Hits was produced by Jerry Goldstein, owner of LAX and a former member of the Strangeloves who had co-written the 1963 hit My Boyfriend's Back and produced War. It is the last album with Roger Rogerson and the only one with drummer John Ingram. The title track, also issued as a single, takes its cue from the Stars on 45 medley of 1981. It joins six covers into one story: Along Comes Mary, Close to You, Afternoon Delight, Having My Baby, Love Will Keep Us Together and D-I-V-O-R-C-E.
Coup d'Etat and When the Shit Hits the Fan were both used in Alex Cox's 1984 film Repo Man, the second in a re-recorded version. AllMusic's Greg Prato wrote that the record amounted to perhaps the ultimate punk rock party. Maximum Rocknroll's Jeff Bale praised short blasts such as In Your Eyes and Coup d'Etat but found the mid-tempo numbers, including When the Shit Hits the Fan, boring.
