People Hold On was written by Matt Black, Jonathan More and Lisa Stansfield, produced by Coldcut and released on 13 March 1989 by Ahead of Our Time as the first single from What's That Noise?. It reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1989 and number six on the US Billboard Dance Club Play chart. It was remixed by Blaze, Juan Atkins, Dimitri from Paris, Mark Saunders, Eric Kupper, Tyrone Perkins and Masters at Work. Big TV! directed the video.
David Quantick of NME called it one of the best things done by either Coldcut or Stansfield. Fact ranked it number 11 in a 2014 list of diva-house belters, and Mixmag put it among the 20 best diva house tracks in 2019. In 1996 the British producers Dan Bewick and Matt Frost remixed it as the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the CD single of those bootleg mixes, released on 6 January 1997, reached number four in the UK. Sony refused to license it for Coldcut's own Journeys by DJ mix.
