Sleep on the Left Side opens When I Was Born for the 7th Time at 4:06, with Dan the Automator as co-producer. Greg Neate called it a strangely hypnotic, sloping opener that acts as a foil before the riff of Brimful of Asha arrives. Trouser Press thought the pairing of this song and Brimful of Asha among the best one-two leadoffs of the 1990s.
It was a top 30 single.
