Memphis Slim reworked an older blues in 1949, and it became a standard with many versions. Joe Williams recorded it with the Basie orchestra in New York in 1955, with the title Every Day and a big-band arrangement. It spent twenty weeks on the R&B chart and reached number two. Williams had earlier taken a different recording to number eight, with the King Kolax Orchestra in 1952.
Four different versions of the song have reached the Top Ten of the Billboard R&B chart. The Basie and Williams recording is one of two to receive a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, which it won in 1992.
