Only McDonald and Melton remained from the original lineup, and the songs were credited to them. Founding members Hirsh and Cohen also played, alongside David Getz and Peter Albin from Big Brother and the Holding Company and Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane. I'll Survive and Maria were taped at Vanguard Studios in New York and the rest at Pacific High Studios in San Francisco. Getz recalled that Charters wanted studio musicians for most of the tracks, and that he played on two of them.
For the first time some songs carried strings and brass, which gave the record a poppier character. Here I Go Again, backed with Baby, You're Driving Me Crazy, was issued as a single and did not chart. Twiggy covered Here I Go Again in 1976, and it reached 17 in the United Kingdom. The album peaked at 48 on the Billboard 200 and spent eleven weeks on the chart.
