Recorded in New York in July and August 1967, with the exception of Thought Dream, an outtake from the February sessions for the debut. With a bigger budget than before, songs went through several arrangements and many overdubs. The band stayed at the Chelsea Hotel, recorded by day in the studio in the same building, and played a two-week residency at the Cafe Au Go Go at night.
Besides the title song, Who Am I was written before the first album. Colors for Susan grew out of a long talk between McDonald and Charters. Joel Brodsky photographed the cover, on which the band wore costumes found in a New York studio. The original sleeve held a poster for The Fish Game, a board game with paper cut-outs of the band. The album peaked at 67 in early 1968. Rolling Stone's original review was favorable, while Billboard said it was not up to the group's par.
