The first session, in a small docklands studio, went badly because the group had just come off the road after a gruelling tour and were tired. The second was at the Sharon Temple, north of Toronto, an unheated landmark with lively acoustics. Music spilled into Margo's vocal microphone and caused feedback, so on the last day she was moved to a corner in a booth of baffles and sound blankets that the band called the witches hut. The cover photograph shows the band outside the building. The record company said the results were not what it had hoped for, and the band reworked the songs on tour before deciding to start again. Those recordings were released in 2022 as Sharon.

In December 1989 they went into Eastern Studios in Toronto. Moore placed the group around one central microphone and also gave each instrument its own, so for the first time the album had to be mixed. They threw out the mixes an outsider made and redid them themselves over a couple of weeks with Moore and the engineer Tom Henderson.

The sound was more polished than The Trinity Session, and critics gave it average reviews, saying the band had sacrificed its distinctive style. It did better on the radio, with Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning and Rock and Bird, whose single version has Bruce Hornsby on piano. It reached 47 on the Billboard 200 and 33 in Britain. Margo said of the band's style, "It's not country, it's not blues, it's not rock, we just do what we do."
