Cowboy Junkies, 1986

Released
October 1986
Recorded
June 1986
Studio
The band's rehearsal garage, Toronto
Label
Latent Recordings
Producer
Peter Moore

The first recording with Peter Moore's Calrec ambisonic microphone was made in the garage on Crawford Street where the band rehearsed, onto standard Betamax tapes. Moore put a mattress in front of the drums to keep them from overpowering the rest, and Margo sang through a PA so that an electrified voice sat with the electric guitars. No label would distribute it, so the band released it on their own Latent Recordings in October 1986. RCA reissued it internationally in 1991, and Mobile Fidelity put it out on SACD and vinyl on 27 March 2007.

Nearly all of it is covers: songs by Lightnin' Hopkins, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker. The only original is Take Me. A version of Sweet Jane was also recorded at the sessions but left off. Q magazine's Paul Davies called it a shadow X-ray of the blues, haunting and mesmeric.
