Pendulum's best-known song came out as a single on 29 December 1970 with Hey Tonight on the other side. It reached No. 8 on the Hot 100, No. 3 on Cash Box and No. 1 in Canada in March 1971. Fogerty told Rolling Stone in 1993 that it is really about the impending breakup of Creedence. AllMusic's Mark Deming heard it as a comment on the fading of the 1960s counterculture, a reading Fogerty disputes, and in 2012 he said the song now reminds him of his daughter and rainbows.
Fogerty played Hammond B3 organ on it, as a homage to Booker T. & the M.G.'s, and Cook played some piano. Cook has said the song and Pagan Baby were written and rehearsed in the studio. A video for the band's fiftieth anniversary in 2018 was filmed in Montana, directed by Laurence Harlan Jacobs and starring Jack Quaid, Sasha Frolova and Erin Moriarty. Spotify reported a billion streams in March 2023.
