Fogerty wrote and recorded the song only a few days before the band's April 1970 European tour, and it opens with a high-pitched guitar riff of his. The lyrics invite the listener to a gathering up around the bend on the highway. Released with Run Through the Jungle on the other side, the single climbed to No. 4 on the Hot 100 in spring 1970 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. In the UK it reached No. 3 and was certified silver by the BPI. Cash Box called it a powerfully sung and played bit of rock, and Record World called the pairing with Run Through the Jungle a two-sided monster.
Elton John recorded a version early in his career, and Hanoi Rocks took it to No. 4 in Finland. A version by Fogerty and Eric Church is the theme music for Amazon Prime Video's coverage of the NASCAR Cup Series.
