Drawn from shows at the Fillmore East in New York on 2 to 7 June 1970, The Forum in Los Angeles on 26 to 28 June and the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 5 July, the album reached number one on the Billboard 200 and was awarded a gold record. Sides one and two are acoustic and show the band as four individuals, while sides three and four have the full band on electric guitars. The rhythm section was Calvin Samuels on bass and Johnny Barbata on drums. The set includes both sides of the group's new single, Ohio and Find the Cost of Freedom. The first pressing came without a track listing, which appeared only on the labels and on a fold-out poster.
Rolling Stone's George Edward Kimball called it their best album to date. The tour was tense and the group stopped working together soon after it ended. Nash produced an expanded CD edition, released on 15 June 1992, with four solo acoustic performances, one from each member.
