Made over about seven months and produced by all four members, Deja Vu was the group's first album as a quartet. Stills estimated it took around 800 hours of studio time and said that getting it out of them was like pulling teeth. The title track took about 100 takes, while Carry On went from conception to finished master in eight hours. Most songs were recorded in separate sessions by each member, and Young appears on only half of the tracks. Jerry Garcia played pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children and John Sebastian played harmonica on the title track. Dallas Taylor and Greg Reeves played drums and bass on most songs.
Atlantic took $2 million in preorders by January 1970. The album topped the Billboard 200 and produced the Top 40 singles Woodstock, Teach Your Children and Our House, was certified seven times platinum and has sold more than eight million copies. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the 13th Grammy Awards. Rolling Stone ranked it number 148 on its 500 greatest albums in 2003 and number 220 in 2020. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry in 2023.
