Most of it was recorded at Nigel and Jody Horrocks' house at Karekare Beach, with Greg Hunter engineering and Bob Clearmountain mixing, and Mark Hart now a full member. The title track features the Māori choir Te Waka Huia and log drums. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine found it more experimental and varied than anything the band had done before, and Martin C. Strong called it possibly their finest effort.
