After the Temple of Low Men tour, Neil and Tim Finn wrote together for a Finn Brothers album. Capitol then rejected most of a new Crowded House record, so the brothers' songs went to the band, on condition, Tim said, that he joined; he later claimed he had been joking. Recording spread over six studios on two continents, Bob Clearmountain mixed it, and Nick Seymour designed the cover with Tommy Steele.

It went to number six in Britain, where it went double platinum, and reached number one in New Zealand in April 1992. AllMusic's Chris Woodstra heard in it the joy of reunion and the freedom of collaboration. It was ranked third in 100 Best Australian Albums in 2010.
