Don't Dream It's Over
Written on his brother's piano while a party went on next door, it became a US number two and their most played song.

Finn wrote it on Tim Finn's piano at Tim's house in Melbourne, where Hester was living. Hester had invited people round, and Finn, not in the mood for company, shut himself in the music room. He said it came largely in one go, and he demoed it at home that day on a cassette four-track, with a matchbox for a snare. Finn called it a private message to someone withdrawing from their world. The verses weigh the burden of possessions, but he said the chorus was a hopeful call not to let the negative thoughts and the oppressors win. He has also pointed out that the title can be read two ways.
Froom suggested the Hammond organ solo, and Finn told Uncut the song found its groove only when Froom proposed a bassline that Seymour built on. It was cut at Capitol Studios the day after the session where Keltner and Scheff replaced Hester and Seymour, and Finn felt the take came out a little sadder for it. Tim Pierce added the electric guitar flourishes. Capitol had tried upbeat singles first; a junior promotion staffer, Paulette McCubbin, kept calling smaller radio stations until it broke. It reached number two in the United States, held off the top by Aretha Franklin and George Michael, and won Song of the Year at the 1987 ARIAs.
Live and after
Crowded House first played it at Yamashiro in Los Angeles in November 1986, and setlist.fm logs it close to six hundred times since, more than any other song of theirs. It closed the 1996 farewell, where Finn remembers Hester in tears. When his falsetto went on long tours, Finn handed the high note to Hester and Seymour. He has played it with Fleetwood Mac, and in 2020 the band recorded it from their homes for the Music From the Home Front benefit. Paul Young sang it at the 1988 Nelson Mandela tribute at Wembley and later took it into the British top twenty, and covers range from Sixpence None the Richer to Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande. Netflix's Monsters returned it to the charts in 2024.
The upload in the hypersongs web is the official video for the 1986 studio recording, directed by Alex Proyas, in which Finn moves through one house in different eras among flying crockery and floating film reels.
