Ross has said, in an interview with Johnnie Walker and on SpectatorTV, that the song was inspired by Gael's Blue by the Scottish singer-songwriter Michael Marra. The lyric names Homesick James as the narrator's biggest influence and also name-checks James and Bobby Purify. A brass section of eight players, arranged by James Prime and Warne Livesey, plays on the album version.

The main B-side was Long Window to Love. The 10 inch and standard CD single were titled Four Songs from Scotland, and a 7 inch box single was called Souvenir from Scotland. The 12 inch carried a 6:57 extended mix.
