Bambu was intended as the follow-up to Pacific Ocean Blue. Production began in 1978 at Brother Studios in Santa Monica, with Carli Muñoz, a Beach Boys keyboardist and close friend of Wilson, as songwriter and producer. The first four songs officially recorded were Muñoz compositions: It's Not Too Late, Constant Companion, All Alone and Under the Moonlight. The project stalled for lack of financing and because of simultaneous Beach Boys projects.

Recordings from it were compiled as bonus tracks on the 2008 expanded edition of Pacific Ocean Blue, and in 2017 it was released on its own as Bambu (The Caribou Sessions).

Uncut's Peter Paphides wrote that School Girl, He's a Bum and Wild Situation were mostly written with Gregg Jakobson, that I Love You was a tender exception, and that Muñoz brought songs aimed at Wilson's romantic side. Pitchfork's Mike Orme named Common, Are You Real and Cocktails as the peaks of the bonus disc and noted that Wilson once called the record a hundred times better than Pacific Ocean Blue.
