Engineer John Hanlon told Uncut the song was written one evening at Wilson's home on Broad Beach Road in Malibu, with the sliding doors open and the sea air blowing the curtains. Wilson recorded it in the studio a week later, and Hanlon said the whole feeling came through in the recording.
Uncut's Peter Paphides described the song as moving from minor chords and hushed assurances into a major-chord burst, and quoted its line "All things that live, one day must die". A piano reworking, Piano Variations on Thoughts of You, closes the 2017 release of Bambu (The Caribou Sessions).
