Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs produced it and wrote it with Kandi Burruss and members of the group. Burruss said the idea came in a store, when Briggs began beat-boxing the beat, and that the verses drew on her own dating experiences. The track is led by harpsichord-style synthesizers. The song confronts a boyfriend over credit card and phone bill charges, and LeToya Luckett explained that the group wanted him to pay it back and take responsibility for what he had done.
It was the lead single from The Writing's on the Wall, released on 31 May 1999. It entered the Hot 100 at 84 and reached number one five weeks later, replacing Jennifer Lopez's If You Had My Love. It spent nine consecutive weeks at the top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and reached number six in Britain. It was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2000. Darren Grant's video is set in a futuristic salon, inspired by Headliners, the Houston salon run by Tina Knowles. Pitchfork's Katherine St. Asaph wrote that the group had to explain the song again and again in interviews, and Alexis Petridis called it Destiny's Child's answer to TLC's No Scrubs. In 2021 it climbed again on streaming services and TikTok.
