Destiny's Child, 1999
- Released
- July 1999
- Recorded
- October 1998 to April 1999
- Label
- Columbia Records
- Producer
- Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, Rodney Jerkins, Missy Elliott and others; executive producers Mathew Knowles and Briggs
Recording began in October 1998 and was finished by April 1999, mostly in Houston. Beyoncé co-wrote 11 of the 16 tracks, Rowland ten, Luckett nine and Roberson eight. Briggs and Burruss were told there was room for one more song, played Bug a Boo, and the group decided to structure the album around it. Briggs went on to produce four more tracks, including Bills, Bills, Bills. Rodney Jerkins produced Say My Name at Pacifique Recording Studios in North Hollywood, and Missy Elliott wrote, produced and guested on Confessions. Every track ends with a spoken commandment that sets up the next one, and the album closes with an a cappella Amazing Grace dedicated to Andretta Tillman, the group's original manager.
It entered the Billboard 200 at number six with 133,000 copies, peaked at number five in May 2000 and stayed on the chart for 99 consecutive weeks. The RIAA certified it eight times platinum. Pitchfork's Katherine St. Asaph credited Briggs and Burruss with its sound of sharp guitar riffs, record scratches, bubbles and breaking glass. Rolling Stone placed it at number 291 on its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums.
