Banhart wrote "I Feel Just Like a Child" when he was 18 and demoed it on an unplugged electric guitar as a slow blues. He recorded it properly at 23 or 24 for Cripple Crow, when he had found what he called his musical family, including Andy Cabic, Noah Georgeson and Thom Monahan. He said the song was about getting away with being himself, naive and idealistic, without shame.

For the album he wrote more lyrics, including "From my womb to my tomb", which he called a homage to Marc Bolan. The words are written from a child's perspective. He was listening to a lot of Fela Kuti at the time, so the studio version became more of a groove. Wanting something more interesting than a key change, the group made the middle sound as if everything goes underwater. When someone walked past with a husky he asked whether they wanted to howl with their dog, which is why a dog is credited on the album. Friends filming one night produced the video.

Cabic played acoustic guitar, and the percussion was shared between Banhart, Greg Rogove and Cabic. An early solo demo of the song is available on streaming services.
