Sex Packets is a concept album about G.S.R.A., Genetic Suppression Relief Antidotes, a glowing pill the size of a quarter in a condom-sized package, supposedly developed by the government so astronauts could have a satisfying sexual experience in situations where it would otherwise get in the way of the mission. Shock G told interviewers the packets were designed for astronauts, though most reviewers took the story with a grain of salt. Atron Gregory was executive producer, Steve Counter recorded and mixed it, and Jacobs drew the cover as Rackadelic.

Contemporary Musicians reports that the album came out in early 1990 after legal problems over samples. Its samples include Parliament's Aqua Boogie and Herbie Hancock's Chameleon on Underwater Rimes, a riff from Jimi Hendrix's Who Knows on The Way We Swing, and Parliament's Flash Light on Doowutchyalike and two other tracks. Money-B has said Freaks of the Industry and The Humpty Dance were the last songs recorded, because two others did not clear. The cassette added three tracks and the full-length Gutfest '89.

The album reached 24 in the United States, 8 on the R&B chart and 59 in the UK, and was certified platinum on 18 September 1990. The Source praised its mix of jazz piano and funk and the use of live drums alongside turntables. Rolling Stone ranks it at 114 among hip-hop albums. It was picked for The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums in 1998 and appears in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Brian Coleman's book Check the Technique has the group going through it track by track. Rhino reissued it in 2005.
