On Every Street came out on 9 September 1991, more than six years after Brothers in Arms. By then the band was Knopfler, John Illsley, Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher. Session players included Chris White on flute and saxophones, Phil Palmer on guitars, Paul Franklin on pedal steel, Danny Cummings on percussion and, on one track, Vince Gill on guitar and backing vocals. Jeff Porcaro of Toto played drums on most tracks and Manu Katché on two, and George Martin arranged and conducted the strings on one.

It reached number one in the UK and 12 in the US, and was certified platinum by the RIAA. Iron Hand is about the Battle of Orgreave in the 1984-85 miners' strike. Six singles came from it, among them Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel and The Bug. Porcaro was asked to play the tour but declined. The 14-month tour ran to 216 shows and sold 7.1 million tickets, and was documented on On the Night, recorded in Nîmes and Rotterdam in May 1992.
