She called its sound blue mountain music, a blend of bluegrass and mountain music, and did not want a purely bluegrass record. She sang live with the band, some scratch vocals stayed in the mix, and Steve Buckingham and Gary Paczosa fixed small flaws rather than replace strong takes. Chris Thile took the mandolin chair, and the Irish band Altan joined her on In the Sweet By and By. Alongside Little Sparrow she remade three older songs and covered Cole Porter and Steve Young.
It went to number one on the UK country chart, and Shine won a Grammy. Entertainment Weekly gave it an A and said a sequel could surpass the original.
