- Written by

- Released
- 1964
Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote it in 1962. Chuck Jackson recorded it first, but that version was shelved and stayed unreleased until a 1984 compilation. The first release came from Tommy Hunt, who sang over the same backing track on Scepter in May 1962, and it did not chart. Springfield brought the song back from a trip to New York in February 1964, when she met Bacharach. She recorded it at Olympic Studios in Barnes, with Raymonde arranging, Big Jim Sullivan on guitar and Bobby Graham on drums. Franz is credited as producer, though she later said her solo Philips records were self-produced.
It was her third solo single in Britain and the first to show her signature vocal style. It peaked at number three in July 1964, behind the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night and the Rolling Stones' It's All Over Now, and it remained her highest British chart position until You Don't Have to Say You Love Me reached number one in 1966. A concurrent US release was pre-empted by the presence of her recording Wishin' and Hopin' on the American charts, and when it finally came out there in October 1965 neither it nor its flip side reached the Hot 100.
