Munich was released as the second single on 18 April 2005 and peaked at number 22. Re-released on 2 January 2006, it reached number 10 in the UK and brought a Top of the Pops appearance. It was recorded at Mayfair Studios in London with Jim Abbiss producing, and mixed by Cenzo Townshend. The song is in G minor at about 150 beats per minute. Critics noted a drum groove reminiscent of Interpol's Evil and marching, tremolo-picked guitars.
Smith has said the title has no meaning and has nothing to do with the German city. He took his chord progression from the weird and familiar chords of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. In 2021 he said he wrote the lyrics and chords in under five minutes of hungover soul searching with a sprinkle of self-loathing, and that the song's few words give it a longer life than Bullets. The video was directed by Mark Thomas.
Corinne Bailey Rae covered it for Jo Whiley's BBC Radio 1 show in 2006, and R.E.M. recorded a version for Radio 1 that appeared on Live Lounge Volume 3 in 2008. The song has been used in the games Saints Row, FIFA Street 2 and Major League Baseball 2K7, on A Question of Sport, and in the 2008 film One Missed Call. setlist.fm lists it as the band's most played song, with 848 performances.
