Giants of All Sizes

A darker album made through three deaths, and the third Elbow number one in a row.
Elbow, 2019

Released
11 October 2019
Label
Polydor

During the making of the album Garvey's father Don died in March 2018, and in October 2018 two friends who ran Manchester venues, Scott Alexander and Jan Oldenburg, died within eight days of each other. The liner notes are dedicated to all three. Dexter & Sinister alludes to the left and right of Manchester's coat of arms, which Garvey now pictured without its two supporting animals. The Delayed 3:15 is about a man who killed himself under a train that Garvey was travelling on, White Noise White Heat is about the Grenfell Tower fire, and My Trouble and On Deronda Road are tributes to his wife and son. Weightless closes the record.

It entered the UK chart at number one, the band's third in a row, with Dexter & Sinister, Empires and White Noise White Heat as singles. The Guardian's Damien Morris called it grittier, angrier and greyer than before and praised Weightless, while The Independent's Roisin O'Connor called it perhaps their greatest since The Seldom Seen Kid. The cover is a stock photograph of a crowded swimming pool in China.
