Sandy Denny had left to form Fotheringay and Hutchings had left for Steeleye Span, so the album was made by Swarbrick, Thompson, Pegg, Mattacks and Nicol. Like Liege & Lief it reinterpreted traditional tunes, sewing many into two medleys, "Dirty Linen" and "Flatback Caper". The nine-minute "Sloth" stayed in the live set for many years. Vocals were overdubbed at Vanguard Studios in New York in April 1970.
Before release, Thompson asked for "Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman" to be removed because he was unhappy with his lead vocal. The first sleeves had already been printed with the song listed, so a black block with a gold overprint corrected the list. The album entered the UK chart on 18 July 1970, stayed 11 weeks and peaked at number 13. Rolling Stone called it an English equivalent to The Band.
