Bob Dylan wrote "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" in 1964. Manfred Mann took it to number 2 in the UK in 1965. Fairport heard Dylan's unreleased songs at his London publishers and chose it for Unhalfbricking. The French lyrics were made up during the interval of a gig at the Middle Earth Club. Nicol said boredom was one reason for the idea, and that a few people in the dressing room, French visitors or students of French, were there.

Island issued it as a single in the UK and A&M in the US. It reached number 21 on the UK chart and spent nine weeks there. It is the only Fairport single to chart. On 14 August 1969 the band mimed it on Top of the Pops, with a roadie, Steve Sparks, on percussion. Lamble played stacked chair backs on the record, Swarbrick played fiddle and Trevor Lucas played triangle. Pitchfork called it a playful zydeco-flavored reading.
