Sun Giant was recorded mostly in January 2008 at Bear Creek in Woodinville, with more work at the band's house and at Avast, where it was mixed. It was cut after the debut album but released first. It began as a tour-only release and was put out officially when fans asked for it.
Pitchfork's Stephen M. Deusner reviewed it on 29 February 2008 and described the group as a pastoral psych-pop band. Billboard said the EP had harmony-rich songs more in keeping with Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Rolling Stone gave it three stars out of four. Pitchfork named it a best album of 2008 alongside the debut. It reached 170 on the Billboard 200. An alternate 3:39 version of Mykonos appears on the deluxe edition of the debut.
