One Nation Under a Groove

The tenth album and the biggest seller: a dance-minded Funkadelic with Walter Morrison on keyboards and a live Maggot Brain on the bonus EP.
Funkadelic, 1978

Released
22 September 1978
Studio
United Sound Studio, Detroit
Label
Warner Bros.
Producer
George Clinton

Recorded at United Sound Studio in Detroit, it was the first Funkadelic album with Walter Morrison and Funkadelic's most commercially successful record. It went to number 1 on the R&B albums chart and number 16 on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum in the US, and reached number 58 in Canada. Bill Martin has written that it owes a good deal more to progressive rock than most critics admit, as well as to progressive soul, Hendrix and Sly Stone.

In the US the LP came with a bonus 7-inch EP carrying a live Maggot Brain, Chant (Think It Ain't Illegal Yet!), Lunchmeataphobia and P.E. Squad / Doo Doo Chasers. One song was recorded live on 15 April 1978 at the Monroe Civic Center in Monroe, Louisiana. Guitarist Michael Hampton has said the title track was well under way when he was called in to overdub, and that he was trying to get one of the first guitar synthesisers to harmonise with his guitar.

Steve Huey judged it the best realization of Funkadelic's ambitions and one of the best funk albums released. Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker called it a glorious distillation of Clinton's verbal anarchy and tight funk grooves. Rolling Stone ranked it 177th in 2003 and 2012 and 360th in 2020.
