Uncle Jam Wants You
The eleventh album, a possibly more militant sequel to One Nation Under a Groove, waging war on disco, that carried the fifteen-minute (Not Just) Knee Deep.
Funkadelic, 1979
- Released
- 21 September 1979
- Label
- Warner Bros.
- Producer
- George Clinton (as Dr. Funkenstein)
The title echoes the Uncle Sam recruitment posters, and the cover claims the record is there to rescue dance music from the blahs. Clinton appears on the sleeve in a Huey Newton pose, and Pedro Bell supplied the back cover and interior. The album went to number 18 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the R&B albums chart, and was the second Funkadelic album certified gold. The DJ organization Uncle Jamm's Army took its name from it.
Its last big hit single, (Not Just) Knee Deep topped the soul singles chart. Paul Sexton of Record Mirror gave the record four stars out of five, and Rolling Stone's review picked out the first ten minutes of Knee Deep as state-of-the-art black pop music.
