Woodland takes its name from the East Nashville studio the pair have owned since 2001, which a March 2020 tornado nearly destroyed. It is the first collection of original material jointly billed to Welch and Rawlings, and the first original Welch material since 2011. Rawlings produced it, with engineers Matt Andrews and Ken Scott. The singles were Empty Trainload of Sky, on 19 July 2024, and Hashtag, on 9 August.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Pitchfork noted a string section and, for the first time since Soul Journey in 2003, a rhythm section, with hints of organ and pedal steel adding dimension to the harmonies. Welch told Uncut they were so relieved the studio still existed that they wanted to use it fully. Ketch Secor plays fiddle on The Day the Mississippi Died, and Hashtag is a tribute to Guy Clark. Uncut named it second and Mojo fourth among the albums of 2024, and it won the Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2025.
