Gong composed and improvised the material on tour from October 1973 to May 1974, then recorded it at The Manor that summer with Simon Heyworth producing and engineering. Everything is credited to COIT, the Compagnie d'Opera Invisible de Thibet. Allen described a mystical agreement among the players that produced pieces which seemed improvised yet came out geometrically and mathematically exact. French Wikipedia hears tension on the record between the playful musicians, such as Allen, and the more technical ones, such as Moerlen. The sessions also produced Where Have All the Flowers Gone?, which stayed unissued until Gong Live Etc. in 1977.

AllMusic gave it four and a half stars and called it the band's most spacy album. Rolling Stone ranked it 38th among the greatest prog rock albums in 2015, with Will Hermes finding it both hilarious and semi-profound. It was the last album by Allen's Gong until Shapeshifter in 1992. It has been reissued by Charly and Virgin, remixed in 1997 as You Remixed, and remastered for the 2019 box, which also carries the 1974 quad mixes.
