American Idiot is one of the two overtly political songs on American Idiot, alongside Holiday. It argues that mass media has orchestrated paranoia and idiocy among the public, with cable news coverage of the Iraq War as its example. Armstrong said he wrote it after hearing Lynyrd Skynyrd's That's How I Like It on his car radio and wondering why anyone would be proud to be a redneck. He plays a 1956 Les Paul Junior on the song and switched to a reissued 1959 Les Paul for the double-tracked solo. He was reluctant to record a solo at all, fearing it would be corny. Its format and cadence were influenced by Midnight Oil's US Forces.
It reached radio on 6 August 2004 as the album's first single and became the band's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, at number 61. It reached number 3 in the UK and debuted at number one in Canada. It was nominated for four 2005 Grammys, including Record of the Year, and Rolling Stone placed it at number 47 on its singles of the decade list in 2009. Kerrang!'s Ian Winwood wrote that Green Day did for their generation and country what the Sex Pistols did for the UK in 1977. Samuel Bayer directed the video, which has the band playing in a warehouse in front of a green American flag with 48 stars.
Live
From 2016 Armstrong began changing a line on stage to refer to Donald Trump, and in 2019 he sang the MAGA agenda in place of a redneck agenda. He used that line on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on 31 December 2023. At a concert in South Africa he sang an Elon agenda. A campaign in 2018 sent the song back up the UK singles chart to number 25. Live versions appear on Bullet in a Bible and Awesome as Fuck, and 5 Seconds of Summer covered it for a Kerrang! tribute album in 2014.
