Basket Case was the second single from Dookie, released on 1 August 1994. It deals with Armstrong's panic attacks before he was diagnosed with a panic disorder. In a 2024 podcast interview he said that around 1992 and 1993 he had written an early version as a love song on a four-track, and that he rewrote the lyrics around his panic attacks, which he called the best decision he ever made as a songwriter. The band demoed the new version at Andy Ernst's Art of Ears studio in San Francisco, and Cavallo heard it on their demo tape. The Dookie recording was made at Fantasy Studios in September and October 1993.
Armstrong plays alone until the end of the first chorus, when the rest of the band joins in, the arrival of the other instruments representing panic setting in. The chord progression closely mirrors Pachelbel's Canon, and the title never appears in the lyrics. The song spent five weeks at number one on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and earned a Grammy nomination in 1995. Mark Kohr directed the video, which was filmed in the abandoned Agnews Developmental Center in Santa Clara County at the band's request. It was nominated for nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1995 and won none. Listeners of BBC Radio 1 voted it the Greatest Punk Song of All Time in 2006, and in 2021 Rolling Stone placed it at number 150 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Live
Armstrong stopped playing Basket Case at the iHeartRadio festival on 21 September 2012, angry that the band's time was being cut. On 16 January 2024 the band played it in a surprise set in a New York subway station.
